Managing Photographs in the Archives is a brand new course for 2018 which has been developed by Margaret Crockett and Janet Foster, Directors of the Archive-Skills Consultancy, in association with Jessamy Harvey. The course combines an introduction to the range of photographic techniques and the identification of the resulting photographic prints and negatives with the requirements for managing and preserving them as archival material. It begins with a facilitated discussion about photographs in the archives, the forms they take, their historical value and how they relate to other kinds of archives. Subsequent sessions cover the characteristrics of different photographic images and the processes which created them, the environmental conditions and packaging needed for preservation, copyright considerations, how to catalogue photographs and plan digitisation projects.

The course trainers will illustrate presentations with examples from case studies, sample photographs and packaging. The combination of presentations, facilitated discussion and exercises will ensure an interesting and relaxed learning environment. It is a participative development opportunity which also provides an occasion for networking with others in similar situations. It is suitable for a range of archive and records management staff, including those who are new to the area and those who wish to update their skills.

The course fee includes the course handbook with supporting notes and useful sources for further information. The fee also includes lunch (with vegetarian option; please let the directors know if you have any other special dietary needs) and tea and coffee.
