BSI’s pages giving details of the records management standard and related documents.

The National Archives
The National Archives webpages for records managers provide a wealth of standards, guidance and assessment tools which are required reading for the public sector and very useful for non-public sector organisations.

JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee)
JISC provides Higher Education Institutions with advice and guidance on records management, as well as conducting research in areas such as the preservation of digital records.

UN Archives and Records Management
This is a toolkit developed for UN Peacekeeping Missions which gives step by step guidance on how to set up a records management programme.

The National Archives
This is a set of Implementation guides (written by Margaret Crockett of the Archive-Skills Consultancy) designed to support implementation of records management under the Lord Chancellor’s Code of Practice.

Records Management Toolkit for Schools
Produced by the Records Management Society, this kit is designed to help schools attain compliance with the Lord Chancellor’s Code of Practice under Section 46 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Lord Chancellor’s Records Management Code
This is the Lord Chancellor’s Code on the Management of Records under Freedom of Information.

The Information Commissioner’s Office
The Information Commissioner’s Office acts as ombudsman for compliance with the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information and the Environmental Information Regulations. This is an excellent site with lots of good factual information.

The National Archives
Lots of information, guidance and checklists are available on the National Archives Services for Professionals pages dealing with legal issues for records management.

Overseas Government

National Archives of Australia
Website of the National Archives of Australia with information on record keeping in the Australian context. At http://www.naa.gov.au/records-management/systems/dirks/index.aspx you can find Designing and Implementing Record Keeping Systems (DIRKS), a methodology for implementing records management programmes which is compliant with the Australian records management standard and ISO 15489.

US national archives
This leads to the records management pages of the National Archives and Record Administration (US national archives).

Records management theory

Records Continuum Research Group project
The Records Continuum Research Group (RCRG) project, based at Monash University in Victoria, Australia, is looking at methods of analysis which enable records to be controlled at different points in time throughout their lifespan. This includes the way records are represented, used, retrieved and disseminated. The group is also looking into how continuum models apply to information management and data archiving.

Retention schedules

Higher Education Institutes
JISC has developed a model retention schedule for HEIs, now in its second edition.

Local Authorities
Retention Guidelines for Local Authorities, a comprehensive document which gives retention periods for most local government records, available on the RMS website.

The National Archives
The National Archives has produced retention and disposal schedules.

NHS Retention Schedules
Part two of the NHS Code of Practice provides retention schedule guidance. (Main link to the NHS Code of Practice for Records Management.)

Doc-Law-Regal
This is a database which gives legal, regulatory and code of practice retention periods for records. It is subscritpion-only but you can sign up for a free trial. This is based on legal research carried out by experienced legal researchers and is continually updated.
